Extensive guidance, for managers and supervisors who control spraying operations, designed to reduce the risk of associated fire and explosion. Reflects the fact that the most widely used industry method of applying paints, lacquers, coats and varnishes is via spray. Accordingly, ten of the most recognised hazards, either involving liquids directly or their vapours, are examined. Chief among these is any lack of awareness of the flammability of many sprays. While other more obvious dangers, eg smoking, are also considered, less apparent risks, such as the proximity of unprotected electrical equipment or overspray onto walls or floors, are explored. The guidance core concentrates on safety controls under the following key headings: spray methods, spray areas, handling, storage, inspection and maintenance.

Note: Previously published in 1977 as guidance note, environmental hygiene 9 (EH9) with ISBN 0118830341.

Update: While the technical content of this guidance remains substantially correct, some of the legislation referred to has been superseded. The Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Petroleum Gases Regulations 1972 have been replaced by the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR). Legislation covering 'General' Fire Safety is now devolved. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Act 2005 applies in England and Wales, and the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 applies in Scotland. Up-to-date information on process safety issues can be found at the link below
