The health of older people

ISBN: 9781904599623
Editors: Rachel Craig and Jennifer Mindell

Many people aged 65 and over lead healthy and active lives, but others of their generation face severe health challenges as they get older.

According to the latest Health Survey for England, nearly two in three adults in this age group suffer from high blood pressure, roughly one in four is obese, and over a quarter of women and more than a fifth of men have symptoms of depression.

Researchers from the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) and UCL (University College London) have conducted a comprehensive national survey, interviewing and testing thousands of people, including 4,000 aged 65 and over. The survey is commissioned and funded by the NHS Information Centre for health and social care.

Key findings from the Health Survey for England 2005 are broken down across Five Volumes:
  • General health and function
  • Chronic diseases
  • Social capital and health
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Methodology and documentation

About the Survey
The Health Survey for England comprises a series of annual surveys, of which the 2005 survey is the fifteenth. All fifteen surveys have covered the adult population aged 16 and over living in private households in England.

Since 1995, the surveys have also covered children aged 2 to 15 living in households selected for the survey, and in 2001 the age range was extended to include children aged under 2.The 2005 survey focused on the health of older people.

The Health Survey series is part of an overall programme of surveys commissioned by The Information Centre for health and social care and designed to provide regular information on various aspects of the nation's health. Each survey in the series consists of core questions and measurements (for example, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements and analysis of blood and saliva samples), plus modules of questions on specific issues that change periodically.

Since 1994,the Health Survey for England has been carried out by the Joint Health Surveys Unit of the National Centre for Social Research and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health , Royal Free and University College Medical School, London.
